Damião Experiença, a truly unique outsider multi-instrumentalist from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, released his first album, Planeta Lamma, in 1974. Often compared to Frank Zappa, Moondog, Captain Beefheart, Sun Ra, Jandek, and Father Yod, Damião Experiença gained recognition for his experimental musical style that spans various genres such as freak folk, psychedelic rock, reggae, and experimental music. His songs, sung in his own created dialect known as the “Planet Lamma dialect,” are known for their improvised and nonsensical lyrics. Despite his musical prowess, Damião Experiença shied away from the limelight, avoiding media attention and refusing even to give autographs.
Born on September 27th, 1935, in Bahia, Damião Experiença endured a troubled childhood, prompting him to run away from home at the young age of 10. He sought refuge in Rio de Janeiro, where he later joined the Brazilian Navy as a radar operator. It is rumored that a fall from a ship’s crow’s nest, resulting in a head injury, played a role in his erratic mental state. After retiring from the Navy, Damião Experiença lived with a prostitute in a stilt house and became involved in the world of prostitution, procuring money to finance his record LPs.
Inspired by his favorite band, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Damião Experiença adopted the name “Experiença” in homage. In 1974, he self-released his debut album, Planeta Lamma, the first of many albums he would produce under his label, Gravadora Planeta Lamma, until the early 1990s. Renowned for his unsociable nature, Damião Experiença maintained a reclusive existence, avoiding interviews and shunning public attention. Despite his unconventional approach to music and enigmatic persona, his influence on the music scene remains undeniable.
