Born on 1986, Daniel Avery is hailed as an esteemed figure in the world of electronic music. His journey as an artist did not begin in the heart of London, where he initially made his mark and carried out his passion, but in the quieter town of Bournemouth, England. A sense of belonging towards guitar music led Avery to play in local bands, drawing influences from iconic acts such as My Bloody Valentine and Kyuss. His magnetism towards dance music was cultivated through his dedicated attendance at Project Mayhem’s clubbing nights. The unraveling of his DJ career can be credited to his invitation to DJ for these joyous nocturnal events.
Avery’s move in 2007 marked the beginning of not just a literal relocation, but also the shift from enjoying music as a fan to shaping the clubbing scene in London as the DJ “Stopmakingme.” This persona allowed him to collaborate with the ethereal Little Boots and the electrifying Hercules and Love Affair. Also playing a significant part in this collaboration lineup was Metronomy. It was in this phase that he became a regular performer at the famous Fabric.
Drawing on the influences and soundscapes of his previous works, Avery’s sound in ‘Tremor’ could be described as a dramatic evolution showcasing a mastery of melding ambient beauty with thunderous force. This new album reaches out to his loyal followers, infusing the guitar music he was initially influenced by with his evolved techno beats and ambient melodies. Featuring collaborations with Alison Mosshart from The Kills and Walter Schreifels of Quicksand and Rival Schools fame, ‘Tremor’ also includes appearances from emerging talents like bdrmm, Julie Dawson of NewDad, yeule, Ellie, Art School Girlfriend, yunè pinku, and the mesmerizingly ethereal Cecile Believe all contributing to the wide spectrum of sounds throughout the album.
In the creation of ‘Tremor,’ Avery adopted a collaborative spirit, making his sixth studio album an expansive, deeply textured journey acting as a collective’s expression. Avery expressed his vision for ‘Tremor,’ as though the album were “a studio in the sky” where all the artists could freely express their creative passions.
Avery is certainly no stranger to producing groundbreaking music and ‘Tremor’ is a testament to his ability to grow and change his sound. His work continues to expand across various genres and his role in the experimental supergroup, Demise of Love, with Working Men’s Club and Ghost Culture is just one more example of his musical diversity. From his acclaimed remixes of songs by Brit legends The Cure, to his revered producer and composer work, it’s clear he’s not limited to one genre or defined by past work.
His efforts on ‘Tremor’ to push his own boundaries while staying true to his roots has invited listeners to join his genre-blending journey. This album stands as a tribute to the post-rave comedown kids and the guitar music enthusiasts, welcoming all to enjoy the ride. ‘Tremor’ marks a significant evolution from Avery’s previous release, ‘Ultra Truth’. His sixth album builds on the foundation laid by past work, while pushing into new territory with a fresh, collaborative approach.
The dynamic nature of Avery’s compositions, as embodied by ‘Tremor,’ strategically deviates from the norms, making Avery’s sound in the music industry quite unique. It is this uniqueness, this unmatched pioneering spirit that makes Avery an inimitable figure in today’s world of music. Daniel Avery’s ‘Tremor’ is undeniably a seismic force in electronic music, an atmospheric reimagining of genre boundaries, and a testament to the power of collective creativity.
