Back in September 2006, the compilation ‘DJs Di Guetto’ unveiled the burgeoning talents of the Lisbon music scene, headlined by DJ/producers Marfox and Nervoso. Their unique fusion of kuduro and tarraxo not only catalyzed a musical movement in their hometown but sent reverberations across the global club culture.
Taking cues from FruityLoops-driven creators from the global south and the Afro-Portuguese diaspora, DJs Di Guetto brought to the fore a rawer and more unfiltered version of Angolan and Central African rhythms. Their sound was not just representative of Lisbon’s vibrant block parties and club scene but ran congruently with the primitive Baile from Brazil and, interestingly, mirrored London’s shift from grime to UKF.
The album is a testament to the forward-thinking creativity of its time. Young trailblazers like DJ Marfox, N.K., Jesse, Pausas, Fofuxo, and Nervoso pushed the envelope with their distinctive blend of robust rhythms and audacious, almost caricature-like electronic notes. This fusion evokes memories of the primal UK bleep techno and rave scenes of the 1990s, yet it carried a fresh flair, pre-empting the shift towards more syncopated beats in Western club music that would unfold in the following decade.
To appreciate the album’s far-reaching influence, one can identify its sonic echoes in the expansive Príncipe catalog, Mexico’s NAAFI label, and even the works of T C F’s Craxxxsmurf and the early tracks of Arca. And undoubtedly, these tracks retain their magnetic appeal even now.
From DJ Marfox’s captivating ‘Drift Furioso’ to DJ Nervoso’s exhilarating tracks like ‘Estrago Terrivel’ and ‘Tapada’; from DJ NK’s trailblazing ‘Mete Chuva Muita Chuva’ to the distorted charm of ’Não Chora Mais Não’, every track speaks to a distinct musical prowess. And let’s not forget the unique offerings from DJ Fofuxo, DJ Pausas, and DJ Jesse, especially Jesse’s techno-infused gem, ‘Techno’.
‘DJs Di Guetto’ is more than just a compilation. It’s a testament to the rich musical heritage of Lisbon, reimagined and presented with a modern twist, celebrating the city’s influence in reshaping the global club music narrative.
