In honor of the 30th anniversary of Susumu Yokota’s iconic mid-90s acid tracks, Transmigration has reissued his works under Dr. Motte’s Space Teddy label. This double album collection, “Space Teddy Collection,” revisits Yokota’s influential acid and trance music, capturing the spirit of the era with lush, ambient-inspired soundscapes reminiscent of the early Goa dance scene. Accompanied by liner notes from renowned 90s trance producer Mijk Van Dijk, this release sheds light on Yokota’s contributions to electronic music, particularly from his albums with Harthouse and the legendary “Acid Mt. Fuji” under the Sublime label.
Susumu Yokota’s music from the mid-90s is characterized by its hypnotic club sensuality and aerodynamic elegance, setting it apart from his contemporaries. The “Space Teddy Collection” curates nine tracks from his albums “Zen” (1994) and “Ten” (1996), showcasing Yokota’s mastery in creating immersive acid house and trance experiences. From the resonant 303 tweaks and spacious pads of “Sou” to the more intense rhythms of “San” and the triplet wiggle of “Tsuru,” each track exemplifies Yokota’s unique approach to electronic music.
The collection also features extended, introspective pieces such as the nearly nine-minute slow-motion groove of “Zen” and the Plastikman-esque ambient acid crawler “Chuu.” These tracks highlight Yokota’s ability to blend rhythmic complexity with melodic subtlety, creating a sound that is both captivating and transcendent. The album concludes with the beatific bliss of “Kaze” and “Tsuki,” leaving listeners in a state of serene euphoria.
Susumu Yokota, who passed away in 2015 after a prolonged illness, left an indelible mark on the electronic music scene. His career spanned various genres, including experimental ambient music and house, under numerous pseudonyms like Stevia and Ebi. Yokota’s work continues to influence and inspire, and the “Space Teddy Collection” serves as a testament to his enduring legacy. This reissue not only celebrates Yokota’s past achievements but also reintroduces his timeless sound to new generations of electronic music enthusiasts.
