Elegiac, the unconventional musical project led by Ted Milton and Graham Lewis, is back with their second release titled “Meet My Stalker.” This four-track EP showcases the duo’s unique sonic style, characterized by unexpected rhythms and captivating lyrics. Alongside the title track, the EP features three updated versions of songs from their self-titled debut album, infused with bass-heavy dub elements and a no wave vibe.
Ted Milton, known for his prolific poetry and avant-garde puppeteering, is perhaps most recognized as the vocalist and saxophonist of the genre-bending band, Blurt. With a string of impressive albums to their name, Blurt has cemented their status as pioneers in the realms of psycho-funk, afro punk, fake no-wave, and pogo jazz. Additionally, Ted Milton has also released numerous solo recordings, showcasing his versatility as an artist.
On the other hand, Graham Lewis, renowned as the bassist, lyricist, and occasional vocalist of the post-punk innovators Wire, has an impressive solo discography under his own name and as He Said. From the influential “Pink Flag” released in 1977, to their latest offering “Mind Hive” in 2020, Lewis has played a pivotal role in shaping Wire’s iconic sound.
The EP “Meet My Stalker” is expertly arranged by electronic composer and sound artist Sam Britton, who skillfully weaves together all the sonic elements. The journey begins with a stripped-down, driving version of “He Folds,” featuring haunting saxophone interludes and pulsating basslines reminiscent of krautrock. Another album track, “Boat,” is transformed into a more robust composition, with Milton’s mesmerizing chants layered over percussive bursts and squawking sax. The title track, “Meet My Stalker,” takes center stage, showcasing an infectious, snarling bassline loop and Milton’s repeated refrain of “It’s a wind up.” The EP culminates with an elongated version of “Vancouver Slim,” brimming with synth bleeps, ricocheting sax solos, and hypnotic vocals. This punchy and idiosyncratic release is a testament to Elegiac’s artistic evolution, packed with melody and groove.
Elegiac’s return with their EP “Meet My Stalker” is a highly anticipated event for fans of Ted Milton and Graham Lewis. With their signature unconventional style and the help of electronic composer Sam Britton, Elegiac delivers a captivating sonic experience. This release is a testament to the duo’s continued innovation and showcases their ability to merge various musical elements into a cohesive and mesmerizing sound. As an evolving project, Elegiac’s second release is an exciting addition to their already impressive body of work.
