In the dystopian year of 2025, Drew Lustman, an American music producer well-known in the industry as FaltyDL, made a striking comeback to Planet Mu after a decade-long hiatus; a comeback marked by his anew LP – “Neurotica”. With the Big Apple as his backdrop, the phase since his last appearance had been punctuated by changes aplenty – an advent into fatherhood, foray into rap production, and an imprint of his own. All these experiences seeped into his composition for “Neurotica”.
During a sabbatical in the vibrant land of Catalonia, FaltyDL was captivated by an obscure but riveting piece of Euro-pop. The track, with its exhilarating pace juxtaposed with the delicacy of the vocals, ignited within him a creative zest. This interplay of pace and delicacy is conspicuously present in “Neurotica”, making it a treasure trove of his most frenzied yet captivating tunes till date. The tracks ‘Speed’ and ‘Con Air’ are a testament to this, quickening the listener’s pulse while cocooning them in ethereal reverb.
Drew Lustman, or FaltyDL was born on May 13, 1983, in New Haven, Connecticut. In 2008, his records caught the attention of electronic music giant, Planet Mu, marking the start of his exciting musical venture. The subsequent years witnessed FaltyDL’s musical journey unfolding across different labels and genres. From Planet Mu’s “Love Is A Liability” (2009) and “You Stand Uncertain” (2011) to London-based Ninja Tune’s “Atlantis” (2011) and “Straight & Arrow” (2012) – FaltyDL kept pushing boundaries, earning accolades and remixing tracks of artists as well-known as The xx and Radiohead.
The year 2011 was remarkable for FaltyDL as he proudly set up his own label, Blueberry Records, named in honor of his grandmother’s blueberry hill. His records “Hardcourage” (2013) and “In the Wild” ” (2014) were both released under this vanity label. Even in 2019, he kept stirring musical landscapes with “If All the People Took Acid”, a unique EP release.
Influenced by the old New York and Chicago sound, FaltyDL has concocted a futuristic version of the Big Apple sound with his music. By spearheading his journey in music with enriched knowledge of various genres that involve hip hop, dubstep, garage, soul, jungle, and electronica, FaltyDL assimilated a plethora of influences. Thus was concocted his unique NYG style, reminiscent of giants like Seun Kuti and Mount Kimbie, yet stepping out into a style of his own. As FaltyDL, Lustman’s take on garage and electronica remains unique, firmly rooted in nostalgia yet brewing with futuristic undertones. His 2025 LP “Neurotica” serves as a culmination of his vast experiences and unique stylistic approach, solidifying his status as a prominent figure in the world of music production.
