Making waves in the musical world yet again, Galliano stages a remarkable comeback after breaking a long hiatus. As a formidable name in acid jazz, the group was first introduced to music lovers in the early ‘90s and has held a strong grip on the jazz and electronica genres ever since. Much revered for their ability to weave intricate musical patterns blending in elements of fashion and current issues, they’ve returned with a sensational 2024 album dubbed “Halfway Somewhere.”
Galliano’s roots stretch back to 1988, when they were the inaugural entry to Gilles Peterson and Eddie Piller’s influential Acid Jazz label. The team comprising of Rob Gallagher, alias Roberto Galliano extending his vocal expertise, received acclaim for icing the cake with unique vocal accents from Constantine Weir and exquisite rhythmic articulation from Crispin Robinson. In the sound control department, we saw Michael Snaith crafted beautiful production dubbed “The Vibe Controller.”
Exhibiting an exceptional panache for collaborative work, Galliano had contributions from several key figures who were instrumental to the characteristic Galliano sound. One formidable addition to the original equation was vocalist Valerie Etienne, who committed her talents to each Galliano album. The line-up also saw skilled contributions from Mick Talbot and Ski Oakenfull, who lent their fingers to the keyboards. Other noteworthy names providing instrumental support included Ernie McKone on the bass guitar, Mark Vandergucht strumming the guitar strings, and Crispin Taylor masterfully handling the drums, amongst others.
Despite a seven-year hiatus due to differences in musical direction, Galliano still left an indelible mark on the acid jazz music scene. Now, after an absence dating back to 1997, their return in 2023 is punctuated by a flurry of live performances and the release of an all-new musical offering, the “Halfway Somewhere” album.
