Hidden Horse is once again taking the music world by storm with their highly anticipated second album, Incorporeal. Following the success of their 2022 debut, Opala, this new release marks their first venture into the world of vinyl. Comprising of João Kyron on keyboards and electronics and Tony Watts on drums, these long-time friends and collaborators have worked on various projects together, most notably the ethereal and captivating Beautify Junkyards under the Ghost Box label. However, as a duo, they embark on a completely different sonic adventure.
Having played numerous live shows following the release of Opala, Hidden Horse had the opportunity to explore a more freeform approach to their sound. The unpredictable nature of their performances, focused on the dynamic communication between João, Tony, and fellow musician Ana Farinha, allowed them to break away from song reinterpretation and delve into uncharted territory. With Incorporeal, the duo captures this new attitude perfectly, offering a less confined album that is unburdened by the need for references or self-referentiality. They have successfully expanded the haunting dynamics of their music, liberating themselves from any design restrictions.
The resulting album exudes a lighter, more fluid, and optimistic feel. While it remains thematically rooted in eternal sci-fi unease, one can envision the likes of Burial residing in the vibrant city of Lisbon, Portugal. João and Tony have shed any doubts they may have had at the beginning of this project and now confidently embrace the unique sound of Hidden Horse. They are unencumbered by narrative constraints, crafting music that is rock-oriented but dressed with the electronic and dance elements they themselves would love to listen to and dance along with. Notably, the inclusion of guest features by Arianne Churchman in “The Tape Spool Within The Horse’s Mouth” and Clothilde in “Espectros no CCTV” adds a new range of emotions and showcases how Hidden Horse’s music evolves when they embrace fresh ideas and voices.
