American DJ, Karizma, born Christopher Clayton in Baltimore, Maryland in 1970 has, over the years, developed a formidable reputation for his versatility and dexterity in music production. He has been able to forge a deep connection with his fans, traversing across different music genres, from hip-hop, jazz, broken beat, to deep house and techno. From his early days spinning at college parties and fashion shows at just 13 years old, to his collaboration with DJ Spen on a project with the Jasper Street Company, Karizma has always showed an impressive knack for innovation and creativity.
Karizma’s ascent in the music industry took a striking turn when he released his first solo work, “The Power E.P.” in October 1999 from Black Vinyl Records. From then onwards, there was no slowing down his musical frontier. His unreleased track, “Twyst this”, quickly gained popularity after being introduced on Gilles Peterson‘s radio program, Worldwide on BBC Radio 1, climbing charts despite it being on a white label record.
In 2007, Karizma‘s unique sound got recognized when he was voted as one of the Best DJs of the year by XLR8R magazine. His debut solo album, “A Mind of Its Own,” released the same year under R2 records further bolstered his position as one of the key players in the industry. In 2010, he received a nomination as the “Best Hometown Hero” by Baltimore city newspaper due to his upward career trajectory, indicating his steady evolution from a local DJ to an international sensation.
By 2011, Karizma had firmly placed his imprint in the world of house music. A mix produced for FACT magazine further cemented his reputation, with the publication praising him as “one of the world’s premiere house producers for well over a decade now”. In 2012, he gifted his fans with an LP collection of his classics, including “Twysted” and “Power”. The limited edition release was a testament to his creativity and attention to detail, with each of the 500 album sleeves individually hand sprayed.
Producing music with purpose and intent, Karizma‘s 2013 double LP/CD “Karizma Wall of Sound”, cemented his legacy. The collaborated efforts with artists like Osunlade, Rokaz and UK star, Sean McCabe showcased his ability to bring together different elements and create music that resonates.
2014 proved to be another successful year for Karizma, both with interesting collaborations, and being placed in the “Hall of Fame” by Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1. This recognition was closely followed by the release of his hotly anticipated double album – “Can’t Call !t” in 2025. After a 12-year hiatus since his last album, this masterpiece serves as a testament to Karizma‘s commitment to refining and expanding his sound boundaries. The unique blend of down-tempo soul, hip-hop, house, and electronic dance in the album highlights his ability to continue breaking barriers even after decades in the industry. Two decades into his career, Karizma‘s evolution shades a light on the beauty of reinvention and the magic of purpose-driven music.
