Kim David Bots, in collaboration with South of North, has released an exceptional musical project called “Oostwestkruisbest.” This collection of music was recorded between 2009 and 2013 in various locations, including an old tramtransfer spot in Amsterdam, a biodynamic living community in Berlin’s Lichtenberg district, and an apartment on Hoofdweg in Amsterdam, which was also used as a grow-house.
The title of the project, “Oostwestkruisbest,” is a creative combination of two sayings, “oost west thuis best” (home sweet home) and “ieder huisje heeft zijn kruistje” (every home has its own troubles). The album contains tracks like “Infinity hours remaining,” which was created during sleepless nights, and “Kopievankopie,” where Kim skillfully utilizes a guitar borrowed from his sister. Another interesting piece is “Die Trommel, der Trum,” which was composed with a drummer boy in mind and features the nostalgic sounds of a Casiotone 701. This German titled track translates to “the drum, the dream.” Additionally, “Ongecontroleerde Dagrestanten” stands out, as it was created using a clarinet without a mouthpiece and a broad elastic band, reminiscent of the ones used by mailmen in the Netherlands. To complete this unique album, “Oostwestkruisbest” incorporates pots and pans from Kim’s own kitchen.
Kim David Bots brings his creativity to the forefront with “Oostwestkruisbest.” Each track showcases his unique approach to music-making, incorporating elements from various places and using unconventional instruments. Collaborating with South of North lends further credibility to this outstanding musical project. With its diverse sounds and intriguing titles, “Oostwestkruisbest” is a must-listen for music enthusiasts who appreciate innovative and boundary-pushing artistry.
