In the world of Reggae, the name Lloyd Woodrowe James, fondly known as Prince Jammy or King Jammy, resonates with the exuberance of lively beats and infectious rhythms. In his exceptional career spanning decades as a dub master, sound system owner, and record producer, King Jammy has pioneered many breakthrough compositions in his meticulously designed sonic lab.
The legend goes back to King Jammy’s early years in late 60s when he begun amassing his fortune through repairing electrical equipment and building amplifiers in Waterhouse, Jamaica. This industrious craftsman, not only employed his honed skills to launch his own sound system, but also served other local systems with tech supplies. Taking a short break from his homeland, he temporarily relocated to Canada, only to return to Kingston in 1976 with renewed energy and vision to build his own studio at his relative’s place in Waterhouse.
Strengthening his ties with Bunny Lee and Yabby You, King Jammy’s work espoused the clear and distinctive sound of dubs for which he is famed globally. On the verge of his breakthrough, he replaced Phillip Smart, who took off to New York City, at King Tubby’s team. This change allowed him to sway into his original productions, setting the stage for the debut album from Black Uhuru in 1977.
Today, King Jammy’s name is synonymous with world-class dancehall music. His iconic work in unveiling the first digital rhythm in reggae music, “Under Me Sleng Teng” by Wayne Smith in 1985, not only redefined reggae but also ushered in the dancehall era. His legacy continues with successful collaborations with contemporary Jamaican artists like Sizzla, leaving an indelible imprint on the panorama of global music.
Embodying his passion for Reggae vibrations, King Jammy is now prepping for a new album launch – “King Jammy’s Unites The Nations With Dub.” The upcoming album stirs a new wave of excitement amongst music enthusiasts, eagerly waiting for a remarkable blend of the acclaimed artist’s past and contemporary creations. His dubs have become even more revered as a pre-eminent force in the Reggae genre in the 21st Century. With stalwarts like Andre Dennis, I Sax, Brandon Harris enhancing the musical depth, there’s a thrilling expectation of what’s yet to come.
Promising a fresh treat of ten tracks that embody the artist’s spirit, the endeavor is set to send ripples across the global audience as King Jammy navigates his way through a mix of classic and new compositions. Of note are two alluring dives- “Climate Action Dub” and “Ceasefire Dub,” showcasing Jammy’s supreme capability to assimilate vintage influences from Sly & Robbie along with the High Times Band. This record, slated for release in 2024, is a testament to the musical genius and the enduring spirit of King Jammy in uniting nations through a musical euphony.
In a world riddled with trials, King Jammy’s messages infused with positivity, love, and unity represent a beacon of hope through the universal language of music.
