Description

Joseph Kamaru, renowned in the ambient music scene as KMRU, is an innovative sound artist originally from Nairobi, Kenya, who currently resides in Berlin, Germany. His upcoming album “Kin,” set for release in 2026, follows the critically acclaimed “Peel” and showcases his evolution in soundscapes. KMRU‘s musical journey began in childhood when he mastered the guitar and sang in a choir, eventually gravitating toward electronic music during his teenage years. This evolution culminated in nearly two dozen Bandcamp releases between 2017 and 2021, establishing him as a prolific creator within the ambient genre.

In his new album “Kin,” KMRU ventures into a rich exploration of intricate sound textures, incorporating elements reminiscent of his early fascination with distorted guitar sounds. While the album draws inspiration from his previous work, it stands apart, as Kamaru has clarified that this is not a direct sequel to “Peel.” The creative process began in Nairobi in early 2021 and was temporarily halted due to the loss of his collaborator and Editions Mego founder, Peter Rehberg. Following a period of reflection, Kamaru resumed work, culminating in this immersive project that blends personal narrative with complex sonic layers.

“Kin” is an album that invites listeners to uncover its intricacies over multiple listens. Tracks like “Trees Where We Can See” create an inviting atmosphere, while “Blurred,” in collaboration with fellow electronic artist Fennesz, displays a captivating interplay between twangy guitar sounds and shimmering drones. The album offers a kaleidoscope of emotions, with darker tones in “They Are Here” that tap into the melancholic side of Kamaru’s artistry. Moments of euphoric joy can be found in “Maybe,” showcasing his ability to balance contrasts in his compositions.

The production quality of “Kin” is a testament to KMRU‘s dedication to his craft. His deep understanding of sound design and texture makes each track an experience unto itself. The final track, “By Absence,” serves as both a conclusion and a gateway for further auditory exploration, emphasizing Kamaru’s skill at creating immersive environments that linger with the listener. It’s evident that among contemporary electronic musicians, KMRU ranks high, with Pitchfork recently noting his significant influence on the genre.

Beyond the technical prowess displayed in “Kin,” KMRU draws on cultural influences shaped by his background and exposure to various musical styles. The ambient movement finds resonances in the works of artists like Aphex Twin and Brian Eno, both celebrated for their groundbreaking approaches to sound. Kamaru’s ability to weave indigenous sounds with expansive electronic landscapes places him firmly in this lineage, while also bringing his unique voice to the forefront.

Ultimately, “Kin” promises to be an evocative experience for fans and newcomers alike, encouraging listeners to engage fully with its nuanced compositions. With its intricate layering and thoughtful arrangements, KMRU‘s latest offering stands as proof of his evolution as an artist and a celebration of his rich sonic heritage. Audiences can expect an album that truly rewards patience and repeat listening, delivering a transformative journey through sound when played loudly and slowly.
