Laura Groves, the talented singer-songwriter from Bradford, has released her latest album ‘Radio Red’, a captivating blend of nostalgic pop that draws inspiration from Cocteau Twins, Fleetwood Mac, and Kate Bush. With echoes of Dean Hurley & Gloria Endres de Oliveira’s ‘Oceans of Time’, Marissa Nadler, and Angel Olsen, this album is a delightful treat for fans of ethereal music.
Having previously recorded as Blue Roses under the label XL and collaborating with Nathan Jenkins (aka Bullion) as an independent artist, Groves has found her perfect musical home with Bella Union. ‘Radio Red’ is her most complete and authentic work to date, with a collection of songs that evoke the essence of half-remembered pop tunes, ambient sounds, and electronic music. This album seamlessly combines elements of 1970s folk-pop, 90s shoegaze, and 80s soft rock, creating a unifying romantic atmosphere throughout.
The familiarity of tracks like ‘Sky At Night’ and ‘D 4 N’ is intentional, channeling the enchanting melodies of Cocteau Twins’ ‘Four Calendar Cafe’ and the slow-burning allure of Italians Do It Better. However, Groves’ powerful voice sets her apart and ensures she stands on her own merit. Even on ‘Any Day Now’, a song reminiscent of Massive Attack’s ‘Teardrop’, Groves exhibits a sense of understanding and purpose, weaving a tapestry of experiences inspired by her upbringing in Yorkshire, with the music of Fleetwood Mac and Kate Bush filling her ears and fueling her imagination.
These songs are not simple covers, but rather intricate compositions that incorporate fragments of musical themes and sonic elements. Christopher Cross guitar riffs and Michael McDonald vocal lines can be heard interspersed with disco synths and the simmering sounds of prog rock organ. The result is a captivating and uniquely charming sonic experience that purposefully plays with the uncanny.
