Seattle-based musician Jeff McIlwain has returned with his latest album, Sensorimotor, on Ghostly International. This is the producer’s fourth album for the label, and it showcases his exceptional talent for creating unique melodies that capture the listener’s attention. Using various instruments such as an MPC1000 drum machine, a Prophet 5 analog synthesizer, glockenspiel, field recordings, hand percussion, and live instrument samples, he produces electro-pop tracks with intriguing twists that make them even more interesting. The album includes collaborations with Vilja Larjosto and is similar to the sound of Astro Nautico’s Photay for those who enjoy harmonious electronic compositions.
Sensorimotor’s standout tracks include ‘Flyway’ and ‘The Lift,’ which captivate the listener with their thick, propulsive electro beats. Aside from the bouncy, buoyant productions, the record also presents an oscillating instrumental of chattering clarinets and ‘The Level,’ which conveys the ghostly presence of a young woman haunting the melody. The album overall is a manifestation of McIlwain’s exceptional abilities and his unique style to create music out of simple melodies elevated to a level beyond the mundane. His work is an impressive addition to the roster of artists on Ghostly International, like Moderat, who have earned recognition for bringing unconventional but creative compositions to life.
