Six years from their last opus, the electronic music duo, Maribou State, makes an impressive comeback with their third album, “Hallucinating Love.” Hertfordshire-born Chris Davids and Liam Ivory, known for their reimagining of downtempo electronica, take us on a riveting musical journey once again. Pulsating with energy and filled with sublime anthems, “Hallucinating Love” is the duo’s testament to their evolution in balancing intimacy and complexity in their music, reminiscent of their previous albums, “Kingdoms in Colour” and “Portraits.”
Formed in 2011, Maribou State has since swept the global dance music arena with their unique fusion of UK club music, vintage soul, and diverse samples. Their firsthand experience with the early club scene combined with notes of nostalgia found home in their popular 2019 single “Turnmills”, an ode to the iconic London club. The boys from Hertfordshire, essentially credited with giving electronic music a much-needed soul, have graced various stages, from Glastonbury to the Sydney Opera House, all while conducting successive sold-out tours in the UK, EU, and North America.
Paralleling their growth in the music scene are their personal journeys. Chris Davids’ struggle with a significant brain condition in recent years has not impaired the duo’s productivity. Rather it strengthened their bond and spurred their ongoing evolution into a much-awaited album. “Hallucinating Love” is a light in the darkness, signifying community strength and prevailing against the odds. The album gathers an impressive ensemble of talents, such as the soulful vocals by Holly Walker and Andreya Triana, and the addition of skilled producer Jack Sibley. The album bears witness to the duo’s artistry and tenacity, similar to other substantial players in the industry like Alpines and Lana Del Rey.
“Hallucinating Love” introduces exceptional singles such as ‘Blackoak’, which embodies Maribou State’s unique blend of genres: the earthen tones of folk music, elastic funk basslines, epic string sections, and catchy vocal hooks. Additionally, ‘Otherside’ features long-term collaborator Holly Walker, confirming Maribou State’s propensity for complex yet soul-touching harmonies.
Maribou State’s musical journey is comparable to a vibrant palette of colors, creating various soundscapes in the minds of their listeners. Their music engages in evoking sundown reminiscences, much like artists Khruangbin and Maceo Plex. With the release of “Hallucinating Love” on the horizon, Maribou State proves yet again their unrivaled ability to capture hearts and ears, cementing their position as stalwarts in the electronic music arena. Indeed, Maribou State’s return in 2025 will be a celebrated moment in electronic music history.
