Nestled in the rich tapestry of ambient music, a 1987 gem titled ‘The Dreambird’ emerges from the depths of obscurity. Crafted by the revered Serbian ambient connoisseurs, Mitar Subotić (known by some as Suba or Rex Ilusivii) and Goran Vejvoda, this ethereal soundscape has waited patiently for three decades to be rediscovered. Now, thanks to Lugar Alto, a reputable Brazilian label, ‘The Dreambird’ is fluttering back into our consciousness.
It’s a true testament to Subotić and Vejvoda’s genius that their collaboration in Paris during the mid-’80s gave birth to this hour-long sonic odyssey. Vejvoda, credited with pioneering the Serbian underground scene in that era, seamlessly wove languid synths with the lilting cries of exotic birds and the gentle caress of Seychelles waves. These elemental recordings were entrusted to Subotić’s care, who later channeled their essence into a mesmerizing installation by the Danube in Novi Sad, complete with a laser display that danced in harmony with the music.
Interestingly, ‘The Dreambird’ might have remained a Danube legend if not for a twist of fate in Brazil. After Subotić relocated there, he found an unusual ally in a group of nuns managing the Comunicações Edições Paulinas label. Selling it as a “meditation” tool, he managed to get ‘The Dreambird’ its inaugural release. Despite its limited initial audience, the album was a serene fusion of FM synth notes and captivating bird melodies, a tranquility pill with a hint of ethnomusicology.
Now, as the reissue sets to enchant a whole new cohort of ambient aficionados, whispers of Mitar Subotić and Goran Vejvoda’s forthcoming Uprooted 7″ are already in the air, promising a hypnotic downtempo club experience. The legacy of ‘The Dreambird’ is far from over; in fact, with this renaissance, it’s just taking flight.
