Mr. Fingers – Amnesia

Larry Heard, known globally as Mr. Fingers, is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of house music. Emerging from Chicago’s vibrant music scene in the 1980s, Heard helped shape the future of dance music with his pioneering approach to deep house, blending futuristic electronic elements with the warmth of disco. His 1989 album Amnesia—which includes genre-defining tracks like “Can You Feel It” and “Washing Machine”—was recently reissued on his own label, Alleviated Records, giving fans a chance to revisit one of the cornerstones of house music.

Amnesia came at a pivotal moment in Heard’s career. Having been a drummer in live bands, such as the jazz-fusion group Infinity, Heard grew frustrated with the limitations of his role. It was this frustration that led him to explore electronic production. In 1984, armed with a newly purchased Roland synthesizer and a TR-909 drum machine, Heard recorded what would become some of his most iconic tracks. These early experiments laid the groundwork for the deep house sound that would soon dominate Chicago’s underground scene. His collaboration with vocalist Robert Owens in Fingers Inc. further solidified his legacy, producing the acclaimed 1988 album Another Side.

The original release of Amnesia in 1989 was marred by controversy, as it was distributed without Heard’s permission. However, the album’s importance in the evolution of house music was undeniable. Tracks like “Mystery of Love” and “Washing Machine” showcased Heard’s ability to combine rhythmic innovation with melodic richness, drawing influence from jazz and Motown while pushing the boundaries of electronic music. The unauthorized release may have initially limited its reach, but the 2022 reissue on Alleviated Records restored Heard’s creative control, allowing Amnesia to finally be experienced as intended.

Heard’s influence extends far beyond his Mr. Fingers moniker. Throughout his career, he has worked under various aliases, including Loosefingers and Trio Zero, constantly evolving his sound while staying true to his deep house roots. The reissue of Amnesia not only serves as a reminder of his groundbreaking work in the 1980s but also as a testament to his enduring impact on electronic music. Heard’s legacy has inspired generations of producers, from contemporaries like Lil’ Louis to more recent acts such as DJ Pierre, proving that his vision continues to resonate in today’s global music landscape.
