Príncipe artist Normal Nada delivers an exhilarating dose of carnivalesque kuduro madness on his highly anticipated debut album. The LP showcases Nada’s ability to fuse Afro-Portuguese rhythms with overdriven drones and frenetic, boundary-pushing sounds, creating a sonic experience that is perfect for the heatwave.
Known for his role as an archivist and chronicler of Afro-Portuguese music evolution, Normal Nada has spent the past decade sharing his knowledge through mixes, rips, and his own productions under various aliases. His previous release, the impressive “Transmutação Cerebral” EP on Príncipe in 2015, showcased his unique approach to music production.
After almost a decade, Nada finally presents his debut album, channeling his expertise into steamy and outlandish dancefloor hybrids that venture far from their roots and transform into something entirely new.
The album kicks off with “Beautiful Caos,” a twisted combination of dissonant subs, playful melodies, and haunting strings. “Da Rage” exhibits a more restrained approach, blending a thick kuduro rhythm with EDM synths. Meanwhile, “Up Bumbulum” can be seen as a Portuguese response to Jeff Mills’ classic “The Bells,” featuring lively detuned percussion and a batida rhythm that seamlessly transitions into pounding big-room techno.
Nada fully unleashes his wild inclinations on the title track, exploring sawing electric guitar and distorted stabs, juxtaposing industrial clangs with acoustic drum rolls that form into raw kuduro patterns. “Nai Na Chi” maintains the album’s eccentricity, combining tripped-out synths and bird calls with martial rim shots and an urgent kick drum. “Alive” resembles a peak-time anthem, with its infectious happy hardcore vocal samples and euphoric melodies, hinting at influences from Southern rap.
The album is a full-on rhythmic ruckus, designed to get people dancing and immersed in its captivating soundscapes. Normal Nada’s debut release showcases his unique musical vision, pushing the boundaries of kuduro and delivering a thrilling and immersive sonic experience.
