Nyege Nyege Tapes, the influential East African record label, brings the melodic electro Acholi bangers of Otim Alpha to vinyl for the first time. This release, titled Gulu City Anthems, showcases 11 songs that were written and recorded between 2004 and 2015 in Northern Uganda. The album presents a blend of high-energy bangers and more relaxed, romantic tracks, providing a contagious display of Alpha’s unique take on traditional Larakaraka wedding music.
Working alongside producer Leo Palayeng, Otim Alpha infuses Acholi wedding music with a modern twist, introducing stripped-down drum machine polyrhythms to its traditional folk fiddles and call-and-response vocals. The result is a hypnotic and minimalist sound, highly uptempo and pulsating. Standout tracks include the offbeat and infectious energy of “Kodi Pa Barikiya (Kwan),” the rapidfire riffs and powerful toms in “Toni G,” and the Detroit/Chicago-inspired groove of “Too Wiye Ming-Alphazo.” However, the album also features a charming and leisurely piece called “Agiki Ne Tye,” providing a sweet respite for listeners.
After Otim Alpha’s successful live debut at Unsound ’17, this collection is poised to captivate audiences far beyond Uganda and the East African scene. It is likely to find its place among other notable records, such as Shangaan, Konono No.1, and Caribbean soca favorites, making it a must-have for any party playlist.
