Mark Nelson’s latest suite of productions takes us back to the luxurious dub sounds of his earliest Pan American material. Reminiscent of his debut album, these tracks offer deepest midnight dub in all its evocative glory. If you’re a fan of Rhythm & Sound and Seefeel, you won’t want to miss this.
The first Pan American album was a groundbreaking and influential exploration of sound, seamlessly blending jazz keys and ethereal atmospheres with smooth, penetrating basslines. Unlike other dub-influenced electronic music of its time, Pan American’s focus was on creating a mesmerizing atmosphere rather than intricate textures and processes.
The collection titled ‘In Daylight Dub’ brings together some of Pan American’s rarest and most nostalgic dub tracks from the turn of the century. Originally recorded for esteemed labels including Vertical Form, BSI, and (K-RAA-K)³, these tracks beautifully bridge the gap between Nelson’s earlier work with Labradford and the mesmerizing reverberations of Burial Mix.
The four extended cuts on this release are a delight to experience. Opening with the 12-minute track ‘Renzo’, which could easily fit on the debut album, it captures the same dreamy palette and immersive world-building that defines Pan American’s sound. ‘Esso’ cranks up the skank factor with its pronounced rhythm and melancholic keys. On the flip side, ‘Quarry A’ takes a more contemplative approach, reminiscent of Mark Clifford’s work with Seefeel, particularly his enigmatic remix of Cocteau Twins’ ‘Seekers Who Are Lovers’. The track is filled with scattered rimshots, Rhodes piano melodies, and deep basslines. The album closes with ‘Running Dog (Reborn)’, leaning more towards dub techno with its subtly rhythmic presence, reminiscent of the iconic Chain Reaction era.
Despite over two decades passing since his debut, Nelson’s emotional connectivity still resonates deeply. In fact, it has led us down a Pan American rabbit hole, mesmerized by the unique soundscapes he creates. Experience the magic for yourself and immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Pan American.
