Step into the captivating world of Pasteur Lappe, the Cameroonian funk master whose musical legacy spans decades. This amazing compilation takes us back to the 60s when a young and charismatic Nicolas “Pasteur” Lappe made waves as a sensation on Radio Adele in Douala, Cameroon. As his career blossomed, Pasteur Lappe became friends with African music legends like Tala AM, J Moboule, and Fela Kuti, while also promoting local Cameroonian talent tirelessly.
After a move to Paris, studies in journalism, and the publication of his book of poems, “Chansons Negres,” Pasteur Lappe embarked on a new chapter in his life as a musician. Teaming up with the talented backing band and production collective known as the Zulu Gang, he released a trilogy of albums from 1979 to 1981. These albums encompass a wide range of sounds, from infectious funk and disco grooves to soulful ballads, reggae, pop, and more. At their core, they carry the distinctive “Sekele” groove, representing the vibrant dance and musical traditions of Douala.
The compilation kicks off with the pulsating percussion and floor-filling bass groove of “More Sekele Movement,” setting the tone for an exhilarating musical journey. Africa Seven favorite, “Na Real Sekele Fo’Ya,” takes the iconic Moog bass synth to new heights of grooviness. “Sanaga Calypso” explores experimental territory while laying the foundation for a standout track on Kassav’s debut album. “Hiembi Nin” blends elements of Shaft’s groove with synthy Calypso vibes, creating a unique sonic fusion. “Back To Funky” adds danceable funk rhythms to the mix, featuring a guest vocal appearance by Maryse Lappe.
Flipping over to side two of the record, we encounter the mesmerizing combination of Rhodes and sax-led jazz funk in “Mbale,” followed by the captivating clavinet groove, sultry brass, and politically charged lyrics of another remarkable track. “Sekelemania” brings a cool tropical calypso funk flavor to the compilation, while the stomping afro-pop funk delight “ABC” brings the journey to a triumphant close.
Join us as we delve into the extraordinary world of Pasteur Lappe, an artist whose music transcends time and borders. This compilation is a testament to his remarkable talent, showcasing the rich tapestry of Cameroonian funk and his unique ability to create infectious and genre-defying grooves.
