Berlin-based musician Philipp Otterbach has picked up his guitar once again for his latest album, ‘The Dahlem Diaries’. This record, which was written between 2020 and 2022, draws inspiration from friendship and unity, taking cues from the likes of Durutti Column and Brian Eno.
‘The Dahlem Diaries’ sees Otterbach utilizing his guitar as the creative backbone of the album, with contributions from his friends adding extra instrumental layers that he later reworked and reimagined. The result is a diary-like collection of songs that capture a specific moment in time, with Otterbach noting that the recordings may have sounded completely different if made just a day earlier or later.
While Otterbach’s previous works have focused heavily on electronic elements and drums, ‘The Dahlem Diaries’ takes a different direction. The album is predominantly beatless, allowing the guitar to take center stage and create a soundscape reminiscent of Vini Reilly’s personal dream-like compositions. With a touch of melancholy and subtle psychedelia, this is music that can lull you into a deep slumber one moment and then rouse you into extraordinary bliss the next.
