In the fertile underground music scene of 1980s Japan, a unique and groundbreaking album emerged from the avant-garde label Vanity Records, known for pushing the boundaries of experimental music. R.N.A. Organism’s R.N.A.O Meets P.O.P.O stands as a testament to the innovative spirit of the Kansai region’s music scene during this period. The album, now lovingly remastered and reissued, offers a kaleidoscopic blend of mutant dub, industrial noise, and robotic rhythms that continue to resonate with contemporary audiences. This rare release captures the creative energy and daring experimentation that defined a pivotal moment in Japan’s musical history.

The enigmatic trio behind R.N.A. Organism—comprising the cryptic figures of 0123, Zero, and Chance (Tatsuo Kohki)—crafted a sound that was as forward-thinking as it was disorienting. Their collaboration with Kaoru Sato, a producer from the legendary no-wave band EP-4, resulted in an album that defies easy categorization. The initial recordings were so unconventional that even Vanity Records, a label accustomed to the extreme, requested the band return to the studio to produce cleaner versions of the tracks. The final product, R.N.A.O Meets P.O.P.O, offers a more polished, yet still intriguingly raw, listening experience that remains as challenging as it is captivating.

Tracks like the syrupy opener “Weimar 22” showcase the band’s signature style—blown-out drum machine loops, swirling alien vocals, and eerie music-box melodies that evoke a sense of dislocated nostalgia. The album seamlessly merges influences from early electro-pop, industrial soundscapes, and dub, creating a sonic environment that is both familiar and otherworldly. The music moves between the skeletal minimalism of “After” with its tinny environmental sounds and relentless metronomic pulse, to the dub-inflected “Nativity,” where resonant bass lines and off-kilter glockenspiel melodies create a soundscape that is both haunting and hypnotic.

The reissue of R.N.A.O Meets P.O.P.O has been meticulously remastered by Stephan Mathieu, ensuring that every distorted beat and warped melody is preserved in all its gritty glory. The deluxe vinyl edition, cut by Josh Bonati and pressed by RTI, comes housed in a sturdy Stoughton tip-on sleeve, accompanied by an expanded insert featuring an essay by producer Kaoru Sato. This reissue not only serves as a vital document of Japan’s experimental music scene but also as a reminder of the timeless nature of R.N.A. Organism’s sound—music that could easily have been released at any point in the last few decades, yet still feels ahead of its time.
