Raphael Rogiński’s latest album, Žaltys, is a mesmerizing journey through the rich landscapes of Eastern European mythology and nature, inspired by his childhood memories and cultural heritage. Named after the grass snake Žaltys, a revered figure in Lithuanian folklore, the album delves deep into the mystic traditions of the region, weaving together elements of folk, jazz, and American primitive guitar to create a sound that is both timeless and innovative. This release follows the critical success of Rogiński’s 2023 album, Talàn, and continues his exploration of cultural narratives through music.
The inspiration for Žaltys is rooted in Rogiński’s experiences in the Suwałki region of Poland, where he spent his childhood summers. The music reflects the natural beauty and cultural significance of the area, drawing on the sounds and traditions he encountered on the Lithuanian border. Rogiński’s approach to this album is both nostalgic and forward-looking, as he revisits the techniques he developed while recording soundscapes in the forests with his first electric guitar. The track titles, derived from Lithuanian plant names, further connect the music to the natural world, while the album’s composition blends these traditional influences with modern genres, much like the work of artists such as Oren Ambarchi and John Fahey.
Working alongside Warsaw-based musician and producer Piotr Zabrodzki, Rogiński has crafted an album that resonates with the atmosphere of the natural world. Described as “guitar piano,” the recording process involved making the entire studio space come alive, using low-voltage effects, powerful vintage amplifiers, and unique string configurations to create a sound that feels organic and immersive. This is the first time Rogiński has used overdubs on a solo project, adding layers of depth to the album, which alternates between stark, minimalist compositions and lush, intricate soundscapes.
Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė, a longtime collaborator and member of the band Merope, makes a guest appearance on two tracks, including the album’s first single, “Šilinis Viržis.” Her contributions, featuring vocals and the kanklės—a traditional Lithuanian string instrument—add an authentic folk element to the album, enhancing its connection to the cultural roots that Rogiński seeks to explore. The album was mastered by Joe Talia, known for his work with Oren Ambarchi, ensuring that the intricate details of Rogiński’s compositions are beautifully preserved. With cover art by Krakow painter Marcin Janusz, Žaltys is as visually captivating as it is sonically, offering listeners a complete sensory experience that transcends time and place.
Following the release of Žaltys, Unsound will reissue Rogiński’s landmark album Plays John Coltrane and Langston Hughes later this year, giving fans another opportunity to delve into the innovative mind of one of Poland’s most compelling musicians.
