Muito Sol is the third solo album by Brazilian artist Ricardo Dias Gomes. This deep and expansive exploration of classic Brazilian song showcases the subtlety and delicacy that has come to define Musica Popular Brasileira, while also incorporating a modern sensibility and passion for sonic innovation. Gomes, a respected innovator in the Rio de Janeiro music scene, is widely recognized for his work on critically acclaimed albums by Caetano Veloso. Inspired by his experience touring the world with Veloso, Gomes recorded his debut album -11 in 2015, followed by the mini-album Aa featuring Arto Lindsay in 2018. Muito Sol, recorded in New York, Lisbon, and Rio de Janeiro, boasts an impressive lineup of global musicians, including Jeremy Gustin, Will Graefe, Ryan Dugre, Gil Oliveira, Alex Toth, Tiago Queiroz, Jonas Sá, Julian Desprez, Pedro Sá, and Shahzad Ismaily. The album’s seemingly simple compositions gradually reveal intricate layers of instrumentation and arrangement upon repeated listens, resulting in an exciting journey of sonic excavation. This latest release was inspired by Gomes’ transition from Rio to Lisbon, capturing a sense of unease that arose from moving to a more refined and “civilized” culture. While Muito Sol maintains Gomes’ signature dreamy vocals, it also celebrates Brazil’s rich musical heritage through songs based on the Samba Ostinato. Drawing inspiration from influential artists like Caetano Veloso, João Bosco, and Edu Lobo, Gomes takes unexpected routes into experimental territory. Furthermore, an undercurrent of drone adds depth to the album, surfacing prominently in tracks like Fllux and Transição, before the album concludes with the molten, distorted intensity of Coração Sulamericano, a testament to Gomes’ pride in his Latin American roots. From start to finish, Muito Sol envelops listeners in a sun-drenched dream, offering an immersive experience of a truly remarkable album.
