Richie Culver’s debut album, “I was born by the sea,” has propelled him into the realm of outsider music and experimental electronics. This raw and honest album serves as both a statement of intent and a reflection on the difficult path Culver has traversed. The album delves into grim lamentations, faded memories, and anxiety attacks, but also unearths a space for hope. Culver finds optimism amidst the silt of Humberside, using it as the foundation for his visual and sound art. In this collection of expansions and inversions, Culver collaborates with kindred spirits, contemporary inspirations, and old heroes to guide his journey. From artists located in nearby Preston and Bridlington to those further away in Manchester, London, Berlin, and Paris, the album ultimately returns to Hull, where it all began.
The response to “I was born by the sea” has been profound, with artists venturing into its furthest reaches. Space Afrika creates a cool and cavernous expanse by clearing away the pummeling loops of noise in “It’s hard to get to know you.” MOBBS transforms “Pigeon Flesh” into an epic, 10-minute spiral of tension. Morgane Polanski replaces the sea for the city in her adaptation of “I was born by the sea”, reflecting a different kind of ennui. Culver himself revisits “Dream About Yourself” and breathes new life into it. Rainy Miller offers an avant-drill rework of “Daytime TV,” while Aho Ssan melts away the crystalline textures of “Love Like an Abscess” with the crackle of a nascent fire. Teresa Winter transports listeners to her native Bridlington, infusing Culver’s observations with haunting whispers. Fila Brazillia, influential trip hop duo from the ’90s, return for their first remix in 20 years and take listeners on a heartfelt stroll through Culver’s journey. Through these collaborations, Culver’s musical legacy from Hull is celebrated, showcasing the vital sounds that have shaped his artistic expression.
Participant Records will release “I was born by the sea (The remixes)” on gatefold transparent double vinyl on June 23, 2023. The album will also be available digitally on April 21, 2023, via Participant Records and REIF. This collection of remixes is an exploration of Culver’s music and the influence it has had on other artists, creating a dialogue between their creative visions and his own.
