In 2022, a new pressing of Robert Turman’s 1981 avant-minimalist masterpiece, ‘Flux’, has been released, bringing it back into the spotlight and providing a boost to our well-being. Turman, one of the earliest and most underrated figures in the US industrial/noise scene, first appeared on the scene with the single ‘Mode Of Infection / Knife Ladder’ in 1979. However, he soon transitioned into quieter and more expansive territories with his solo work. ‘Flux’, a self-released tape, marked a significant shift in Turman’s artistic direction. By incorporating elements such as the kalimba, keys, a “Mini-Pops Jr.” drum machine, and tape loops, Turman created a mesmerizing tapestry of delicate sounds that engage the listener through subtle techniques and tactile experiences.
The ethereal and elusive nature of ‘Flux’ is what sets it apart from other albums. It effortlessly transports the listener into a meditative state with each play, leaving a lasting impression that is difficult to fully grasp. Without any jarring interruptions, the album possesses a hypnotic allure, employing rhythmelody and shimmering harmonics in a way that was ahead of its time. It casts a spell on our senses, transporting us to more primitive and dreamlike realms. ‘Flux’ acts as the missing piece of the puzzle in the US noise/experimental scene, revealing its occasional flirtations with dreamy guitar jams, psychedelic elements, deep listening, and hypnagogic tape loops. Like a personal diary or intimate self-portrait, it uncovers a journey brimming with emotion, texture, and wonder, standing just outside the boundaries of the conventional musical establishment’s critical perception.
‘Flux’ holds a place of reverence and has greatly influenced artists such as Aaron Dilloway and Helm. This new pressing provides an opportunity to delve into one of the most extraordinary and captivating transmissions from a scene that typically exudes more aggressive energy. With its stunning sonic landscape and artistic depth, ‘Flux’ demands exploration and appreciation.
