Released on July 18, 1986, “Raising Hell” is the third studio album by Run–DMC, marking a pivotal moment in hip-hop’s evolution.
One distinctive aspect of this album lies in its co-production by Rick Rubin, an iconic producer of that era. Showcasing his versatility, Rubin worked with a diverse range of artists, from hip-hop acts like LL Cool J and Beastie Boys to heavy metal bands like Slayer. It was Rubin who pitched the groundbreaking idea of a collaboration between Run–DMC and the American hard rock band Aerosmith. The outcome, a cover of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” from their “Toys in the Attic” album, transcended genres and introduced Run–DMC to a broader audience, thanks to its extensive airplay on MTV.
Moreover, “Raising Hell” features a slew of tracks that would go on to be hit singles. The track “My Adidas” even led to a $1.5 million sponsorship deal for the group with the renowned three-striped brand.
Earning the distinction of being the first rap album to achieve platinum certification in the United States, it climbed to the top of the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and secured the 6th spot on the Billboard 200. It’s no surprise then that “Raising Hell” is listed in Robert Dimery’s reference book, “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.”
