Smokey Robinson’s illustrious music career, steeped in the traditions of R&B and soul, marked a significant turning point in 1974. It was then that he released his second solo album post his exit from the renowned Motown vocal group, The Miracles, titled ‘Pure Smokey.’ Released under the banner of Motown’s Tamla label, the album resonated with Robinson’s signature melodies interwoven with soulful lyrics.

Born William Robinson Jr. on February 19, 1940, Smokey Robinson is a celebrated figure in American R&B, soul music, and record production. A key pioneer of Motown music, he became a household name in the mid-1950s as the lead singer and chief songwriter of The Miracles, subsequently known as Smokey Robinson & the Miracles. His lifelong affiliation with Motown spanned various roles, including a stint as the vice-president of Motown Records. However, he set out on his solo career in 1972, taking a break from his group obligations while focusing on his Motown duties.

‘Pure Smokey’ revealed Robinson’s versatile giftedness, as most of the tracks were Robinson’s original compositions, co-written with ex-Miracle, Marv Tarplin. Tarplin, after leaving The Miracles, joined Robinson in California, assisting him in numerous ways, including songwriting, guitar playing, and touring. Several tracks from ‘Pure Smokey’ made waves on the music charts. ‘I Am I Am’ climbed steadily to rank 6th on the R&B chart, while ‘Virgin Man’ secured the 12th spot. ‘It’s Her Turn To Live,’ an exceptional tribute to mothers co-authored by Tarplin, also found a place on the charts at number 29.

Throughout his career, Smokey Robinson carved out a unique niche for himself, not just as a singer-songwriter, but also as a record producer. His influence has extended beyond The Miracles and the American music scene, reaching global audiences and inspiring myriad artists such as Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. His creative endeavors in music have even caught the attention of the Beatles – particularly George Harrison, who gave Robinson a fitting tribute in his 1976 album, ‘Thirty Three & 1/3.’

Smokey Robinson is a double inductee on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, once as a solo artist in 1983 and later as a member of The Miracles in 2009. Furthermore, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, reflecting his iconic contributions to popular music over several decades. An inspiration to many up and coming artists, Robinson’s music, particularly ‘Pure Smokey,’ stands out for its deep-rooted connection to the core elements of R&B and soul, while also pushing forth his creative boundaries.

Robinson’s esteemed career in music has seen him not just as a popular musical artist but also as a revered personality in the music world. His influence extends to many other artists, including the likes of Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin. His music continues to inspire both old and new audiences, proving the timeless charm of Smokey Robinson’s artistry – a charm that is effortlessly personified in the album ‘Pure Smokey.’
