Mercury Prize-winning rapper Speech Debelle has made her comeback with a new album titled “Sunday Dinner On A Monday.” The British artist explores themes of family, friends, lineage, and ancestral DNA through the lens of afro-futurism. Speech remarks that the album is about how we imagine and create our own futures, as we journey through life and learn from experiences that expand our senses. She adds that this album is THAT album, where we learn internal management and become nourished, like a good meal.
The rapper, signed to the Big Dada record label, first gained recognition after winning the 2009 Mercury Prize for her debut album Speech Therapy. She has since released two more albums, Freedom of Speech and Tantil Before I Breathe, and has been politically and socially active with various charities and movements. Speech has also collaborated with artists such as Bonobo on the song “Sun Will Rise” and her single “Spinnin” was re-worked by Tinchy Stryder and Dionne Bromfield and used as one of the official anthems of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
