For the very first time, Talking Heads’ iconic Stop Making Sense full concert is being released on vinyl. This long-awaited release brings back the magic of a performance that captivated audiences during the band’s Speaking in Tongues tour in 1983. The visionary director Jonathan Demme witnessed this powerful show and approached the band with the idea of turning it into a concert film. Collaborating over several months, Demme filmed three electrifying performances at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater in December of that year, resulting in the masterpiece that is Stop Making Sense.
This concert film serves as a retrospective of Talking Heads’ career at the time, featuring a meticulous arrangement of songs from all six of their studio albums. The show unfolds with meticulous precision, commencing with David Byrne alone on stage performing “Psycho Killer” alongside a drum machine. Gradually, after each song, a new band member joins Byrne on stage until Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison complete the ensemble. As the concert progresses, additional members of the exceptional touring band are introduced, including keyboardist Bernie Worrell, percussionist Steve Scales, guitarist Alex Weir, and backup vocalists Lynn Mabry and Ednah Holt.
While Stop Making Sense primarily highlights Talking Heads’ music, the film also includes a few tracks recorded outside of the band. Tom Tom Club’s “Genius Of Love,” a side project by Weymouth and Frantz, adds a distinctive flavor to the concert. Moreover, Byrne’s solo tracks from his 1981 album The Catherine Wheel, namely “What A Day That Was” and “Big Business,” also find their place in this iconic performance. This vinyl release offers a remarkable opportunity to experience the energy and artistry of Stop Making Sense, celebrating not only Talking Heads but also the contributions of these related artists to the band’s musical landscape.
