Ustad Noor Bakhsh, the maestro from the Makran Coast of Balochistan, has finally released his much-anticipated solo album, titled “Jingul.” This incredible debut showcases Noor’s exceptional talent and pays homage to the beautiful bird that frequently visits his home. The album was recorded live on the mesmerizing Shadi Kaur creek at sunset, capturing the essence of Noor’s village near Pasni, Balochistan.
Noor exhibits his remarkable skills by playing the Electric Benju, a unique instrument he amplified using a vintage pick up and Phillips amp he stumbled upon in a Karachi market thirty years ago. The Benju, originally a Japanese children’s toy known as the Taishōgoto, underwent modifications by Baloch musicians, transforming it into a refined folk instrument for their own use.
Balochistan, bridging the gap between modern-day Pakistan and Iran, possesses a rich musical heritage, particularly in Makran, that reflects the region’s historical connections with Africa, Persia, and Arabia through the vast Indian Ocean world. Noor’s music transports listeners into this captivating realm, reminiscent of the influences of other notable artists.
