Drummer and composer Yussef Dayes began his career with the band United Vibrations, blending afro-beat, jazz, and rock. Their album The Myth Of The Golden Ratio was acclaimed by the British critics in 2016. In the same year, he collaborated with Kamaal Williams under the name Yussef Kamaal, and their album Black Focus impressed both professionals and the public.
Born in London in 1993, Yussef Dayes was introduced to the drums at the age of 4 by his bassist father. His mother was into country music and 1960s pop, while his father was passionate about reggae, jazz, and funk. He grew up surrounded by these influences. At the age of 10, he was mentored by jazz giant Billy Cobham, which greatly influenced his musical development. Soon, hip-hop and drum and bass also became part of his musical universe. His music is rooted in all these influences, and it shows.
This live recording from September 2022 is released on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label, the pioneer of the Acid Jazz movement in the 1990s. It features five fabulous tracks performed by an equally fabulous quintet. The jazz is infused with funk and soul. The work of bassist Rocco Palladino matches the sensuality and groove of saxophonist Malik Venna. Influences from John Coltrane and Gil Scott-Heron are evident. It’s pure joy! It may be short (20 minutes), but it’s intense.
