4AD is buzzing with excitement as Anjimile gears up for the release of his forthcoming album, The King, set to drop on the 8th of September. In anticipation of this release, Anjimile has unveiled a third single to give fans a taste of what’s to come. To provide a more in-depth introduction for fans subscribed to the 4AD mailing list, the label recently sent Jimi a Q&A.
A Glimpse into Anjimile’s World:
Favorite Literary Work? While not a book, Anjimile has a soft spot for “The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe.
5 Desert Island essentials? These include classics like Hunky Dory by David Bowie, Blonde by Frank Ocean, Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, Black Messiah by D’Angelo, and Madvillainy by Madvillain.
Most cherished venue played? Anjimile has fond memories of TT the Bear’s Place in Boston, Massachusetts, which, though now closed, was the backdrop for many pivotal moments in his early music career.
Dream support slot? Radiohead, without a doubt.
Highlight of the musical journey? Anjimile cherishes the time spent with Shawn Everett, who has not only provided invaluable insights into music but also imparted life lessons.
Alternate career path? Had music not been the chosen path, teaching at the elementary or middle school level would’ve been on the cards.
Songwriting heroes? A diverse list that includes the likes of Radiohead, Frank Ocean, Sufjan Stevens, Iron & Wine, D’Angelo, Animal Collective, Earl Sweatshirt, and Paul McCartney.
Hobbies outside of music? From cycling and journalling to watching classic movies, Anjimile has a range of interests.
Go-to dish to cook? Baking sandwich bread, a skill recently acquired, courtesy of a bread machine gifted by his father.
Favourite fictional character? The Cat in the Hat, for its sheer unpredictable nature.
Special Offer: For those eager to get their hands on the album, 4AD Store is offering a limited yellow vinyl edition, which comes with an exclusive signed photo print bundle.
Deep Dive into The King: “If Giver Taker was an album of prayers, The King is an album of curses.” In this sophomore effort, Anjimile delves deeper into the experience of being a Black trans individual in America. Drawing from a myriad of influences, including religion, Phillip Glass, and raw life events, The King stands as a testament to Anjimile’s evolution as an artist. The album’s brutally candid reflection on the tumultuous summer of 2020 is a poignant commentary on contemporary times.
