4AD is a cult British record label founded in London in 1979 by Ivo Watts Russell and Peter Kent. Originally launched as Axis Records, the label soon became 4AD and grew into one of the most influential names in independent music. Its catalogue brings together alternative rock, post punk, gothic rock, dream pop, indie rock and electronic sounds, with a distinctive artistic identity shaped by both its music and visual style. During the 1980s, 4AD released landmark records by Bauhaus, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Pixies, This Mortal Coil, Modern English and Throwing Muses. The label later continued its story with artists such as The Breeders, Lush, Red House Painters, TV on the Radio, St. Vincent, Bon Iver, Deerhunter, Big Thief, The National, Dry Cleaning and Future Islands. Known for its elegant, mysterious and forward thinking aesthetic, 4AD remains an essential label for fans of independent music, cult albums and adventurous sounds.
