Brendan Perry has revealed the reissue of his 1999 opus, “Eye of the Hunter.” The repress is expanded to include a bonus live album – “Live at the I.C.A.,” which was recorded during 4AD’s renowned 13 Year Itch residency at London’s distinguished I.C.A. venue in 1993. The release date is slated for 20th October 2023.
The reissue is available in both light green and light blue transparent vinyl editions, as well as on CD. For those subscribed to the mailing list, an exclusive offer awaits: a limited number of signed vinyl editions, available 30 minutes prior to the general pre-order.
A journey back to 1999 reveals Brendan Perry venturing into the solo realm with “Eye of the Hunter,” an album that houses eight tracks of brilliance. Having taken a hiatus from Dead Can Dance to pave paths for solo endeavors, Brendan’s debut encapsulated his reputation as a solo performer. This was particularly evident in Dead Can Dance’s live performances, where Brendan, armed with an acoustic guitar, often performed alone. Their 1994 live album, “Toward The Within,” contains three such tracks, setting the stage for his solo journey.
Critics heralded the album:
“Blessed with snatches of delusional brilliance.” – NME
“Perry’s first solo effort is a mature work worthy of his reputation.” – All Music
“Weeping strings and mournful slide guitars snuggle against Perry’s blissful brushed-velvet voice.” – Entertainment Weekly
“Eye of the Hunter” was conceived at Brendan’s Quivvy Church studio in County Cavan, Ireland. He collaborated with Liam Bradley (drums), Glen Garrett (bass guitar), and Martin Quinn (pedal steel) while also handling the 12-string guitar, mandolin, keys, and of course, his haunting vocals. The album’s production, in particular, is a highlight, drawing comparisons to the likes of Scott Walker and Tim Buckley.
With the album having been out of print on vinyl since its release, its reissue is a much-anticipated event. Mastered at the iconic Abbey Road, the reissue also comes with “Live at the I.C.A.” This bonus was only available in a promotional cassette and features the single ‘Happy Time (Live at the I.C.A.),’ a Tim Buckley cover.
The artwork, crafted by Chris Bigg, has been given a fresh look, with the vinyl color – transparent teal for “Eye of the Hunter” and seafoam green for “Live at the I.C.A.” – mirroring the album’s tones. The reissue will also be made available on CD, with signed vinyl copies exclusive to the 4AD webstore.
