Laurence Pike, the acclaimed Australian drummer and electronic musician, continues to push the boundaries of contemporary music with his latest project, The Undreamt-of Centre. This ambitious album reinterprets the traditional requiem mass through a modern lens, blending Pike’s signature drumming with minimalist electronic elements. The album, set to release on September 6th, showcases Pike’s deep commitment to his craft and his ability to weave together diverse musical influences into a cohesive, evocative experience.

The second track from the album, “Mountains Of The Heart,” exemplifies the introspective and organic nature of this work. Pike reveals that the rhythm for the track originated as a simple melody he sang into his phone while walking in the Australian bush, highlighting his intuitive approach to composition. He explains that much of the album was created through a process of careful listening, with an emphasis on maintaining the purity of the drum-driven sound. The album’s title and the track’s name are both inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus, adding a layer of poetic depth to the music.

Pike is set to premiere The Undreamt-of Centre with two live performances at Sydney’s Phoenix Central Park cultural center, where he will collaborate with the VOX Sydney Philharmonia Choir. These performances, scheduled for August 22nd, promise to be a powerful live interpretation of the album’s themes. Fans eager to witness the live debut can still enter the ballot for free entry, offering a rare opportunity to experience Pike’s work in an intimate setting.

In addition to his solo work, Laurence Pike is well known for his contributions to several influential music groups. He is a member of the experimental band PVT (formerly Pivot) and the trio Szun Waves, alongside Luke Abbott and Jack Wyllie of Portico Quartet. Pike’s extensive experience also includes his role in the now-defunct Triosk and collaborations with artists like Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders, Sarah Blasko, and D.D Dumbo. With The Undreamt-of Centre, Pike not only cements his reputation as a masterful musician but also as a visionary artist capable of creating deeply resonant and genre-defying works.
