Starting a musical enterprise in 1993, a group of artists under the pseudonym Kompakt, set out on a voyage in the turbulent waters of the music market. The challenging and capricious music landscape has never deterred them, rather fueled their resolve over the years. Three decades down the local musical lane and they’ve culminated a total of 500 releases. This feat is being surpassed, against the customary industry practice, by celebrating with an extravagant 5LP box set. Guided by a democratic process, they collected the 50 best out of thousands released over 33 1/3 years for this endeavor.
Kompakt’s milestone achievement is not only being heralded with this unique compilation, but also with an art exhibition named KOMPAKT 500 commencing on May 23rd, 2025, at Kölnischer Kunstverein. This celebration will display on three floors, Kompakt’s visual cosmos, including DJ sets and live performances by Kompakt Allstars.
Kompakt is, in fact, a product of Cologne’s phenomenal music scene. Starting out as a record store called “Delirium” in 1993, it was established by the likes of Wolfgang Voigt, Reinhard Voigt, Jörg Burger, and Jürgen Paape. They were soon joined by Michael Mayer. The label officially commenced operations in 1998, uniting several pre-existent labels, a record store, distribution services, and event organization activities.
Their music style, emanating from their capability to blend deep, granular sound design with 4-bar rhythmic intensity has won them accolades. Their releases often enrich abstract techno tracks with pop elements, a trait that is often identified as Kompakt’s biggest strength. Prominent producers such as Superpitcher, Justus Köhncke, Michael Mayer, Rex the Dog, and Gui Boratto have contributed to Kompakt’s rich and diverse portfolio.
This release, Kompakt 500, featuring an array of artists like Tocotronic, Justus Köhncke, Terranova, Kaito, and many more basks in its glory with a vast assortment of music. All of these songs are a testament to the versatility of this compilation incorporating the vibes of various artists like Aril Brikha, Gas, and DJ Koze among others. It validates the philosophy of ‘art of omission’ embodied by Kompakt, along with elevating the essence of groovy loop minimalism.
