As a multidimensional composer and creative genius, Christian Fennesz, famously known as Fennesz, has always taken delight in pushing the boundaries of conventional music. The Austrian virtuoso, whose versatile guitar plays, mingling with glitch production and treated samples, has been a recurring musical wave since the 1990s, found a groundbreaking approach to produce his 2024 album, ‘Mosaic’.
Fennesz sketched an expressive auditory canvas with ‘Mosaic’, aiming to capture each note like a distinct tessera in a vast sonic mosaic. The striking feature of this album was the depart from the norm; a systematized work schedule was adopted by the seasoned artist, a method previously implemented during the production of his 2019 album, ‘Agora’. This represented a shift from the sporadic pattern predominant in earlier projects, leading to the unparalleled consistency evident in ‘Mosaic’.
Primed and set to work in his third studio in four years, Fennesz invested his full energy into ‘Mosaic’—starting the composition from a blank page. His modus operandi involved a regimented daily routine; his day would start early with focused work sessions until midday, followed by a breather and another round of work until evening. The phase of collecting ideas, experimenting, and improvising preceded the more rigorous process of composition, mixing, and rectifying.
This remarkable album offered an array of rich layers, interweaving varied influences and freeing endless possibilities for listeners to explore and interpret. Amidst the rich ensemble, ‘Love and the Framed Insects’ stood out with its impressive 7/4 time signature, ostensibly hidden at first listen. ‘Personare’ drew inspiration from 1980s West African pop music, while ‘Goniorizon’ evolved from an assemblage of fierce rock guitar riffs that birthed a remarkable sonic experience.
It’s noteworthy to mention that Fennesz has previously crossed creative paths with numerous talented artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jim O’Rourke, Ulver, David Sylvian, and King Midas Sound. This sphere of influence amalgamated with Fennesz’s stirring melodies and unique sound production approach, as showcased in his renowned 2001 album ‘Endless Summer.’ Consequently, ‘Mosaic’ offered to listeners not just a sonic landscape but a treasure trove of harmonic stories intricately woven together.
With ‘Mosaic’, Fennesz seamlessly presented a wonderfully immersive, cinematic journey that created a refined dialogue between the craft of ancient mosaics and contemporary digital pixelation. Packaged in a DVD-style case featuring Jon Wozencroft’s art and photography, ‘Mosaic’ echoed the aura of ‘Venice’—an earlier work by Fennesz—but exhibited a more extreme dissection of land, horizon, and sea. Indeed, ‘Mosaic’ unfolded piece by piece into an image of timeless beauty, adding another milestone to Fennesz’s illustrious musical voyage.
