Berlin’s Vaagner imprint has recently reissued KMRU’s intimate 2020 self-release ‘Drawing Water’, accompanied by a captivating 17-minute rework from Abul Mogard. KMRU, a Kenyan sound artist based in Berlin, showcases a departure from his signature style with this melodic and boundary-pushing release. Moving away from extensive field recordings and ambient passages, KMRU explores bubbling sine patterns and off-kilter lullabies, reminiscent of the innovative neo-Kankyo Ongaku movement by Japanese architect H. Takahashi. This shift in direction brings an emotional depth to KMRU’s work, creating a tranquil yet playfully immersive atmosphere, akin to a group of tired robots playing toy synthesizers by a peaceful lake.

In contrast, Abul Mogard, the previously anonymous Italian composer, offers a darker interpretation of KMRU’s compositions. Mogard’s rework introduces a somber tone, enhancing the mellow sketches with processed piano tones and breathy, low vibrational ambience. The original sounds linger just beneath the surface, as Mogard skillfully obscures them with layers of distortion and eerie drones. This transformative approach completely reframes KMRU’s music, imbuing it with a sense of sadness, restlessness, and unease, evoking images of nervous, hungry ghosts. Mogard’s contribution adds depth and complexity to the already captivating ‘Drawing Water’, offering listeners a haunting and introspective experience.

Vaagner’s decision to reissue ‘Drawing Water’ and include Abul Mogard’s rework is a testament to the quality and significance of KMRU’s original release. The collaboration between these artists explores new sonic territories and presents a fresh perspective on KMRU’s work, captivating audiences with its emotional resonance and experimental soundscapes. This reissue is not only a celebration of KMRU’s talent as a sound artist but also highlights the importance of artistic collaborations in pushing boundaries and expanding the possibilities of electronic music. Fans of KMRU, Abul Mogard, and those seeking unique and thought-provoking musical experiences will undoubtedly appreciate this reimagined release.
